With retailers starting to advertise “Black Friday” post-Thanksgiving sales, OSHA is emphasizing how critical it is to ensure the safety of retail workers and customers.
Two years ago, a worker was trampled to death when shoppers rushed through a store’s doors to take advantage of a Black Friday sale. OSHA investigated and issued a citation to the retailer, and we want to make sure that something like that never happens again.
We encourage retailers to develop a plan and take precautions to prevent worker and customer injuries during any event where large crowds may gather. Our fact sheet, “Crowd Management Safety Tips for Retailers,” provides easy-to-implement, yet important safety procedures when crowds are expected.
No sale should cost a life.
