Making Us Mobile

We’re improving mobile access to http://www.dol.gov/, but we want your help. The federal Chief Information Officer (CIO), Steven VanRoekel, developed the digital government strategy to improve how the federal government purchases and uses information technology while enhancing services provided to the American public.  This strategy was developed with input from representatives across the federal government, including the Department of Labor.

Digital Government: Building a 21st Century Platform to Better Serve the American People

There are four primary objectives of the federal CIO’s digital government strategy:

  1. Enable the American people and an increasingly mobile workforce to access high-quality digital government information and services anytime, anywhere, and on any device.
  2. Procure and manage devices, applications, and data in smart, secure, and affordable ways.
  3. Unlock the power of government data to spur innovation and improve the quality of services for the public.
  4. Innovate with less to deliver better digital services.

The first of those objectives is where you, the American public, can help shape our approach. While we work to deliver content and services anytime, anywhere, and on any device, we want to know where you think we should start. What existing Department of Labor website or online service would you like to see optimized for mobile devices first? Please tell us in the comments section below.

A national, high functioning mobile optimized job board to post all types of employment and internships, government and civilian – instead of the many millions spent by each largely ineffective and outdated state one-stop system to recreate the wheel 50 times (and maintain it). As you pointed out, the workforce is mobile, state job boards are old fashioned siloed dinosaurs. There would be a huge cost savings if states ‘bought into’ the system and shared the resources. Statistical data analysis would be improved and simplified if driven through one system for national, regional, state, metro and county.

I second Karla Parker’s recommendation. While I like to see what opportunities are available around the country via email (I have been surprised how long the Economic jobs have been running) having the ability to do a nationwide search online would be a boon for all citizens. If there are cost savings for states, it may be easier to get them on board.

This is good and worth paying concentration specially in this time, when people use their mobile time more for browsing than just listening music.

Congratulations for your innovation and development efforts. I think all public institutions should have similar ambitions for better service.

The Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance programs processes 10s of thousands of legally required notifications of contract award each year. The code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Acqusition Regulations require these. The public loathes, despises, and balks at this still 20th-century, still paper-based process.

Would it be a challenge to build a mobile app so that Contracting Officers and Contractors could notify us of their contract awards using a mobile device? How hard could it be? Its a simple database.

If not, let’s do it! It would save thousands of hours of paperwork, redundancy, and staff time to have an electronic “shop” where people can either email or text their notification of contract award to a nationally maintained database on a government server.

You would need a federal ID or a Federal Employer ID number to log in to the system of course. But those are details.
