Secretary Solis in Nicaragua

Secretary Solis meets with Nicaraguan Labor Minister Jeannette Chavez, International Labor Organization (ILO) representatives and other stakeholders to announce DOL’s funding of Better Work Nicaragua.

My last day in Nicaragua, and I participate in a press conference announcing the Labor Department’s funding of Better Work in Nicaragua. I’m joined at the event by my Nicaraguan counterpart, Labor Minister Jeannette Chavez, and representatives from the ILO and IFC.  They are all very hopeful that Better Work will make a difference in the export textile sector, which is a sector that provides jobs to so many Nicaraguan families. The official announcement gets a lot of attention, and there are many national and international media covering the event. I want the news media here to make it very clear that the U.S. is committed to working with Nicaragua under the principles of mutual respect and common goals.

Despite two days of non-stop events, meetings and activities (plus jet lag), I’m excited as I board the plane for my next country: El Salvador.  I just can’t wait until tomorrow! (Continued in Part 4)

All CA mothers had to be pleased to see a native’s child rise to such prominence.

Secretary Solis:

While you were in Nicaragua did you look up any of your relatives? Or did you not think that was important? To really honor your heritage you need to find your relatives. So did you?
